Google Search Generative Experience Adds SGE While Browsing

Google is introducing new Search Generative Experience (SGE) features, including navigation, descriptions, and color-coded syntax.

Google is introducing many new features for its new Search Productive Experience (SGE). These features include coding enhancements such as using SGE while browsing, identification layers in SGE responses, and color-coded syntax highlighting within SGE responses.

Using SGE While Browsing

Google SGE is now available for browsing on Chrome desktop or the Google app on iOS or Android. When navigating a web page, you can ask Google SGE to generate the main points of the page. Google SGE will summarize the web page you are browsing. This feature will work on “some web pages,” meaning it may not work on all content on the web.

Won't Work With Paid Content

SGE is not allowed to run when browsing paid content. It will be the case if you are using structured data.

Other Ways Out

Google has stated that no custom meta tag exists to allow SGE to summarize your content as you browse. Using paywall structured data will prevent SGE from digesting your content, but there is currently no alternative to avoid this if you don't.

Indexing

Google stated that for SGE to work while browsing, a page must be in the Google index. So, if you prevent any page from being indexed, you also stop this feature from working.

SGE Definitions

Google now offers definitions for specific words in AI-generated responses with SGE. “Hovering over certain words will be able to preview definitions and see diagrams or images on the subject,” Google said.

Code Updates in SGE

SGE is improving the way it shows code in its responses. Google has stated that code snippets will be colored with syntax highlighting, so we can more easily identify keywords, comments, and strings.

Why Is This Development Important?

A.I. rapidly evolves in the search space, and SGE is one of the most prominent players. Bringing SGE to web browsers is a big step towards bringing Bing Chat closer to the Edge sidebar feature. This can allow your readers to understand your content better, gain insight into how Google SGE understands your content, and consume other content faster.

On the other hand, with the SGE feature, while browsing, it seems possible to say that Google aims to allow users to spend less time on sites. If you notice, other related searches are specified in the lower part of the SGE feature when navigating on the right. In summary, Google is trying to motivate you to perform your next search while summarizing the contents of the site you browse.

New Bing Fails To Take Market Share From Google After Six Months

Microsoft disputed data showing that Bing's market share was lower in 2023 than in 2022 before the new Bing was launched.

Although it has been six months since the new Bing was launched with AI-powered Bing Chat, it has not been able to take any market share from Google in the U.S., according to StatCounter data.

Bing’s U.S. search market share was 6.47% in July, per web analytics service StatCounter.

  • When the new Bing launched in February, its market share was 6.35%. Bing’s market share peaked at 6.61% in March.

  • But Bing’s U.S. market share was typically over 7% in 2022, with a high of 7.82% in November.

Microsoft denies this data and states that Bing has taken market share from Google. Microsoft's internal data shows that Bing has made "more progress than in the previous decade or two" in the past six months. However, this claim seems odd, considering Bing's market share was 17.9% ten years ago.

Including myself and many of my marketer friends tend to overestimate people's willingness and capacity to adapt to change. Everyone is looking for answers by asking questions in Bing Chat instead of doing standard Google searches like I do. However, breaking established habits in six months may not be possible.

If most users still believe that Google will give the best results under all conditions (I don't think it!), Bing has to try to persuade users in many ways.

Google Answers If Noindex Tag Is Appropriate to Replace Sitelinks

John Mueller from Google answered whether it's a good idea to use noindex to remove an unwanted webpage from sitelinks.

John Mueller from Google answered whether it's a good idea to use noindex to remove an unwanted webpage from sitelinks.

In the question posed to Mueller, the sitelinks for a real estate website contained a link to the web page of one of the real estate agents. The person asking the question thought Google should show a more critical page in the sitelinks. So he planned to temporarily put a noindex tag on the real estate agent's web page.

John Mueller stated that noindex would not be perceived as a temporary state; the page would either be indexed or not. He added that removing a page from sitelinks using noindex or deleting it is a Google-recommended method.

It is stated as follows on the relevant Google help page:

Google Releases Official GA4 Report Builder Plugin for Google Sheets

You can connect Google Sheets and GA4 using this plugin and create Google Sheet reports tailored to your needs.

This plugin allows users to create and run reports within Google Sheets with GA4 features. Early users praise the simplicity of the tool but demand more features.

GA4 Report Builder allows users to create and run reports with GA4 features within Google Sheets. This can be used instead of going to GA4, finding the correct information, and exporting your data. Specify the report name, target GA4 attribute, date range, and desired dimensions and metrics.

However, the lack of features considered essential by some indicates that Google needs to work harder to meet the overall needs of the industry. This leaves developers an opportunity to continue to find innovative ways to help Google Analytics users analyze website data.
