Google Offers Recommendations to Prevent Index Insertion of Banner Ads

Google's John Mueller answered whether blocking banner ads from Googlebot is possible so that they are not indexed as part of the main content.

John Mueller was asked on Reddit how Google handles banner ads and whether they are indexed as the main content.

John Mueller explained that Google's algorithm is generally good at identifying the main content of a page. However, if there is a problem with the code, for example, if the HTML elements that belong in the section are in the section, Googlebot may start indexing the head content as if it were in the body.

When asked if there is anything that can be done to hide a promotional banner from Googlebot or to let it know that it is not post content, Mueller advised against trying to hide the ad. He mentioned that doing so could slow down the web page. However, he suggested telling Googlebot that it is an ad by using <aside>.</aside>
