Screaming Frog SEO Spider 19.0 Update

Screaming Frog has always been an indispensable tool for SEO professionals. It seems to have become even more indispensable with the release of version 19.0.

Codenamed 'Peel'’ this latest update brings many new features and enhancements designed to make your SEO tasks more efficient and effective.

The first thing you'll notice in version 19.0 is the updated design. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been revamped to offer a more intuitive look and feel. Browsing behavior functions have been moved to the main navigation for easier access, and the tool has been made more user-friendly, especially for free users.

One of the most important updates is Unified Config. This feature consolidates all configuration settings in a single dialog, making it more efficient to adjust settings. I think this modern approach will be familiar to existing users and easier to navigate for newcomers.

Another feature that caught my eye in this update is the introduction of Segments. This feature will allow users to segment a scan to better identify and track issues and opportunities in templates, page types, or priority areas. This granular approach to crawling will undoubtedly be invaluable in large-scale SEO projects.

To create a Segment, follow these steps:

1. Go to Configuration > Segments
2. Click “+Add”
3. Create a name for the segment in the “Segment Name” section. Select the color of the segment.
4. Enter the logic you want to use to group the segment. Select “Address,” “Contains,” and the URL path for a URL segment.
5. Click OK. You will now be able to see Segments in the URL column

You can create Segments according to almost any criteria of a standard Screaming Frog. You can create segments based on metadata, content length, indexability signals, etc.

Its biggest use will probably be to create segments based on page templates. For example, you can create segments for:

1. Product pages
2. Category pages
3. Blog posts
4. Landing pages
5. Resources
6. Author pages
7. About pages

This is an extremely useful new feature; It's a feature that SEO professionals should use to gain more in-depth insights into how technical issues affect different areas of the site.

The Visualized Special Extraction feature is another exciting innovation. This feature allows users to open a web page in the built-in browser and select the items they want to extract. SEO Spider then formulates the correct XPath/CSSPath for extraction, making the process more accessible for those unfamiliar with XPath or CSSPath.

The 3D Visualization feature is a game-changer for those who love data visualization. Users can visualize their data more effectively with the 3D Force-Directed Crawl Diagram and the 3D Force-Directed Directory-Tree Diagram.

The update also includes various new filters and issues on existing tabs. These additions will help better filter data and communicate discovered issues, making identifying and addressing SEO concerns easier.

Finally, version 19.0 includes smaller updates and bug fixes such as a new 'focus' mode, updated preset user agents, an updated SERP snippet tab, and support for Local Storage in Forms Based Authentication.

The Screaming Frog SEO Spider 19.0 update is an important step forward, introducing many new features and enhancements to make your SEO tasks more efficient and effective. Whether you're a seasoned SEO expert or just starting, this update will improve your SEO toolkit.

Analyze Internal Links with ChatGPT Code Interpreter

In this week's ChatGPT tips video, I explained how you can do internal link analysis with ChatGPT Code Interpreter.

In the fourth video of my ChatGPT Tips series, I analyzed the internal links and anchor text in the https://www.stradiji.com/en/seo-glossary/ (SEO Glossary) section of our Stradiji.com website using the Code Interpreter plugin, which is accessible to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers and enabled the tool to create an anchor text cloud.

For analysis, I scanned the SEO Glossary section with Screaming Frog, clicked on Links from the Bulk Exports section, went to the All Inlinks section, and exported the data as a Google Sheet document. After making some edits to the Google Sheet file, I exported it with a .csv extension. I uploaded this data to the Code Interpreter plugin and asked it to read. I deepened the analysis by asking different questions. You can regularly follow my ChatGPT Tips videos by subscribing to my YouTube channel.

Google Explains How You Can Boost Declining Discover Traffic Again

Google's Martin Splitt stated that Google Discover is an organic feature shaped by users' demands and habits.

In a recent Office Hours session, Google's Martin Splitt answered a question about regaining traffic after the Google Discover crash.

Google Discover is a stream of articles tailored to users' interests. However, the exact signals Google uses to identify these interests are not disclosed.

Splitt stated that Discover is an organic feature that aligns with users' demands and habits. Therefore, there is no direct answer on how to regain Discover traffic.

He stressed that while indexed content that meets Google's content guidelines can be included in Discover, traffic from Discover is unpredictable and can fluctuate.

Splitt's statement highlights that the Google Discover selection process is closely tied to what users want to see. Google's page on how to get into Google Discover recommends focusing on new and always-on topics, writing about topics rather than keywords, and keeping content useful and people-first:

Google Discover can be an important traffic source, but it's inconsistent. Focusing on the topic, writing well, using relevant images, and staying up-to-date can increase your chances of earning traffic from Discover.

ChatGPT Now With Memory: New Update Gets the Ability to Remember Your Preferences

OpenAI introduced the feature that allows ChatGPT to remember user preferences and provide personalized responses by providing specific instructions.

OpenAI has recently added a new feature to its language model, ChatGPT, that allows users to enter specific instructions for ongoing and future conversations.

This feature is in beta for Plus users and will be rolled out to all users soon. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to enable and use this feature.

Step 1: Accessing Settings

To enable special instructions, you need to go to settings. If you're using the web, click on your name and select 'Settings'’ Go to 'Beta Features' and select 'Custom Instructions'’

Step 2: Enabling Special Instructions

When you enable special instructions, click on your name, which will appear in the menu. When you select this, two text boxes will appear.

Step 3: Entering Your Preferences

The first text box is “What do you want ChatGPT to know about you so you can provide better answers?” he asks. Here you can enter your preferences. For example, a teacher might state that she's preparing a 3rd-grade science lesson plan, or a developer might state her preferred coding language.

Step 4: Set Response Preferences

The second text box is “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?” he asks. Here you can direct how ChatGPT interacts with you.

For example, someone planning a meal for a large family may state that they need six servings, so shopping lists consider this.

Step 5: Recording Your Instructions

After entering your preferences and response instructions, click the 'Save' button at the bottom to finalize your settings.

Remember, this feature is still in beta testing. Therefore, there may be times when ChatGPT does not follow or follow your specific instructions correctly. However, OpenAI has security measures, including a Moderation API that prevents the logging of instructions that violate OpenAI's content policies.

The custom instructions feature in ChatGPT is a significant advance toward more personalized and helpful AI interactions. It will enable AI to remember user preferences and tailor responses accordingly, providing a more customized and efficient user experience.

Next week, I plan to shoot a special video on this subject and post it on our YouTube channel.

Bing Chat Now Supports Image Search

After this update, we can search by uploading images to Bing Chat.

This tool allows users to upload images and search the web for related content. Bing's Image Search can understand and interpret an image's context and answer questions about the image.

This feature is now available on desktop and mobile platforms for users who want to take photos or upload images to Bing Chat.

This addition is a significant improvement for Bing Chat as it brings a new level of interaction and utility to the search engine's AI assistant.

By the way, if you're waiting for "Dark Mode" to come to Bing Chat, just like me, grit your teeth. Few weeks left :)

Book Of The Week: “The Business of Aspiration, How Social, Cultural, and Environmental Capital Changes Brands” - Ana Andjelic

According to the book's author, Ana Andjelic, the future of brand strategy is taking shape right before our eyes.

Once upon a time, wearing real fur was the most obvious symbol of wealth and status. But nowadays, it has become a sign of ignorance. With the rise of luxury rental and the second-hand market, it's now possible for everyone to wear a Gucci belt around their waist.

The pandemic has upset the whole order, and the rules are being rewritten. “The future of brand strategy is taking shape right before our eyes,” says Ana Andjelic, a veteran brand strategist specializing in modern luxury brands.

There is confusion about how brands should proceed. Small brands are more creative and dynamic: They mobilize their communities, values, and purpose, while big brands move sluggishly. Brands' social, cultural, and environmental capital is now more important than ever.

In this book, experienced strategist Andjelic explains in detail how you can transform your brand story and competitive strategy, create and spread brand symbols, and how you can benefit from social influences to ensure that your products and services create both material and moral value, with analysis, examples, and tools.

I hope you enjoyed my weekly SEO insights. Hope to see you the following Sunday in the new episode. I wish you all a great week.

Mert Erkal
