Google Explains How It Keeps Search Safe with MUM and BERT

Google shared new information on using MUM and BERT algorithms for safer search results.

Google shared new information on using MUM and BERT algorithms for safer search results.

A new blog post by Pandu Nayak, Google member and VP of Search, explained how Google Search uses MUM and BERT to deliver more secure search results.

How we use AI to keep Google Search safe

Important points to be taken out of the article:

  • Google uses MUM to detect better when the query indicates a user is in crisis and will begin rolling out these improvements within weeks. It may be possible to direct a user who needs psychological support, perhaps suicidal, to support lines from the search results.

  • Google uses BERT to understand better when a searcher searches for explicit content.

  • According to Google, using BERT in this way reduced "unexpected, shocking results" for searchers by 30% last year.

Google Sunsetting URL Parameters Tool Next Month

Google plans to deprecate the URL Parameters tool next month, stating that it's no longer needed because it can deal with parameters automatically.

It's time to say goodbye to the URL parameter tool, which I preferred to use, especially on large sites in my SEO consultancy life.

With this tool, we gave Google commands on how it should handle parameterized URLs. For example, after defining the function of the page, one practical option was to let Googlebot decide whether to index the page or not.

Here's what the tool looked like when it was first released in 2009:

This tool lost its function over time. According to Google, we no longer need this tool, as Google has gotten better at what should and shouldn't be indexed. It has recently started to be much more selective about indexing.

Google states that we can use the Robots.txt file to report parameterized URLs to Google.

A robots.txt file lives at the root of your site. Learn how to create a robots.txt file, see examples, and explore robots.txt rules.

Google Shares Search Traffic Tracking Template with Data Studio

With this new Google Data Studio template prepared by Google, you can monitor your search performance more efficiently.

Google created a new Data Studio template. In addition, you can use Google's Search traffic monitoring template to quickly see if there are significant changes in the performance of your most important pages and help uncover potential SEO issues.

Google also announced that the Search Console connector includes Discover and Google News traffic data. In October, Google also added similar data to the Search Console Search Analytics API.

In the article below, you can find the explanation from Google on the subject:

This article shows how to create a monitoring dashboard for your Search traffic on Data Studio. While Search Console provides

out-of-the-box charts and filtering capabilities, Data Studio allows you to customize your own charts and view them side

by side with other data, such as Google Ads, Analytics, YouTube, BigQuery, and others. If you missed our previous article

The following Search Engine Land post explains how you can use it:

Can Google Docs Write Meta Descriptions?

Google Docs can automatically generate content summaries. So can this help us write a meta description? Search Engine Land has tested it.

Earlier this year, Google Docs began automatically generating content summaries for Google Workspace enterprise customers. If you want to dive into natural language understanding ( NLU or Natural Language Understanding ) and natural language production ( NLG or Natural Language Generation ), Google explains how it works and the technology behind it in this blog post.

In short, Google starts suggesting you a summary based on the text of your document. You can choose to use the summary as a meta description if it suits you, or you can edit the summary to suit your liking more.

Search Engine Land has done some tests on this subject and announced the results they have obtained.

My conclusion is this: although these summaries need improvement, Google will continue to improve them as always. Therefore, creating the pages of the websites you are starting with Google Docs and getting their summaries can be a good investment in the long run.

You can find the test results in the article below:

Google Docs can automatically generate content summaries. Can it help you write a GREAT meta description? We tested it to find out.

Google's John Mueller Gives Advice to Increase Your DA

Google's John Mueller answered a question on Reddit about how to improve DA (Domain Authority), which we often encounter in backlink tools.

In his answer, John Mueller states that he is surprised every time he comes across this question as DA is not a Google metric and has no effect on your rankings.

John Mueller considers DA, which he does not know what it means, to increase the quality and authority of the site, and gives the following suggestions to site owners:

  • But, first, create a good audience.

  • Find a low-competition topic that you know or can learn easily

  • Get a good fit with your target audience, and create reasons for them to come to your site repeatedly.

  • In the beginning, act as if there is no SEO; as you work hard over time, water will find its way.

This approach suggested by John Mueller can also lead to more backlinks in the long run. But, as always, getting organic backlinks will be a good choice.

In other words, publish such articles so that sites and blogs that publish articles on similar topics prefer to give reference links themselves.

Google: Accessibility Not A Direct Ranking Factor

John Mueller says website accessibility is not a direct ranking factor because it’s difficult to quantify.

Improvements to accessibility don’t directly impact a website’s search rankings, says Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller.

He stated this during a Google Search Central SEO office-hours hangout recorded on March 25.

One of the questions submitted to Mueller asks if there’s a direct ranking advantage for improved accessibility.

The question explicitly asks for visually separated links from textual content with features like increased font weight, underlining, and color contrast.

Would those types of accessibility enhancements offer an SEO advantage?

The answer is no — not directly, at least.

Google says website accessibility is not a direct ranking factor because it’s difficult to quantify.

By the way, have you ever heard of WCAG before?

The WCAG is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines are developed through the W3C. The goal of WCAG is to provide a single, shared standard solely focused on web content accessibility.

The WCAG documents explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. Web "content" generally refers to the information in a web page or web application, including:

- natural information such as text, images, and sounds

- code or markup that defines the structure, presentation

You may check Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 covers a wide range of recommendations for making Web content more accessible. Following these guidelines will make content more accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities, including accommodations for blindness and low vision,
